What is Proton Exchange Membrane

      Ion exchange membrane is a kind of electrodialysis membrane which is made of polymer material which is selective to ions. Ion exchange membranes can be divided into cation exchange membranes and anion exchange membranes according to their selective transmittance. According to the structure of the membrane, it can be divided into three types: homogeneous ion exchange membrane, heterogeneous ion exchange membrane and semi homogeneous ion exchange membrane.  

  

      1.Heterogeneous ion exchange membrane Heterogeneous ion exchange membrane is referred to as heterogeneous membrane. Is the ion-exchange agent of fine powder and binder mixed, processed film. Because there are ion exchange active groups and cross-adhesive part of film forming structure in the exchange membrane, the chemical structure of the membrane is discontinuous and has obvious phase interface, so it is called heterogeneous film or heterogeneous phase film. At present, the ion exchange membranes used in electrodialysis are mostly such membranes. Easy to manufacture, cheap, but generally poor selectivity, film surface resistance.


     2.Homogeneous ion exchange membrane Homogenous ion-exchange membrane is a kind of homogenous membrane which is made from polymer material with ion exchange group directly (or directly connected with active group on the substrate of polymer membrane). Because of the chemical combination of ion exchange group and film-forming polymer material, the composition is completely uniform. Therefore, it is called homogeneous phase membrane. These films have excellent electrochemical and physical properties. Ion exchange membrane is the main development direction in recent years.

     3.Half homogeneous ion exchange membrane The film forming polymer materials of this kind of films are well integrated with the ion exchange active groups. However, instead of forming a chemical binding between them, the ion exchange resin and the film forming polymer binder were dissolved in the same solvent, and then the membrane was made by the near current method, that is, the half homogeneous phase membrane. Its appearance, structure and properties are between heterogeneous film and homogeneous film.
